Q: How long did it take to build mouser?
A: Around 400 hours of our weekends and evenings were spent on Mouser this year, not including the weekend of competition.
Q: How much did Mouser cost to build?
A: Our first year we were able to get cheap parts and "hand me downs" so we got off easy at $700.00. The last time we rebuilt Mouser cost over $5000.00.
Q: Where did you get your parts to build Mouser?
A: We bought our parts from salvage yards, surplus catalogs, R/C car catalogs, and industrial suply catalogs.
Q: Where did the idea for Mouser come from?
A: We went to Robot Wars in 1996 and April decided we should build a robot that was cute and girlie but mean in a mostly male dominated sport. Pink, cute and kicks butt was the idea.
Q: How can I build a robot of my own?
A: That is a very BIG question. I recommend planning and researching all the technologies you are interested in (radio control, pnuematics, hydrolics, electronics, mechanics, etc.). Find what materials will best suit your robot's needs (aluminum, steel, plastics etc.). There is a lot of helpful information available on the internet. CoolRobots.Com has a great robot building section. Break down your idea into it's different systems (drive, radio control, weapon, armor, chassis). After scetching your design and working it all out on paper you can start buying parts. At this point you can mock it all up. I tested on a piece of plywood with my parts screwed and taped to it. After many plywood tests I was ready to start the real thing. You should expect changing or getting rid of some ideas and parts as you go. In summary you'll need to design, study, test a lot, and most of all BE SAFE.
